Graz is the largest city in Steiermark and often overlooked by
visitors to Austria.
The region is south of Vienna and a gateway to
Slovenia and the Lake Balaton area of
Hungary.
The old town of Graz is built around the Schlossberg Park on the west
bank of the river Mur, and connected to the new town on the east bank by seven bridges.
An early Roman settlement is thought to be beneath Graz.
A castle was built here in the 11th-century, there is a 13th-century
church of the Teutonic Knights, and the 15th-century Gothic Cathedral of St Aegidius. A
16th-century parish church has an altarpiece by the Venetian artist Tintoretto.
Graz was also a residence of the Holy Roman Emperors in the 15th
century, and occupied by the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

Stadt Graz:
The first significant date in Graz’s history is the year 1128, marking the first
documented reference to the city. 250 years later, in 1379, Graz had grown enough to be
designated capital of Inner Austria, an area which comprised Styria and Carinthia, along
with Krain, Inner Istria and Trieste (now in present-day
Slovenia,
Croatia and
Italy). As capital,
Graz was residence to the Hapsburg dynasty until 1619.

Innsbruck literally means bridge over the River Inn.
The capital of Tyrol is popular with winter tourists as its near many
ski areas, and was the site of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics.
Innsbruck is at the junction of two important commercial routes -
both open all year due to their tunnels. The Arlberg Pass goes to Voralberg,
Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, while the Brenner Pass
links into Italy.
A motorway also runs to Munich and the Autobahn system of Germany.

The Furstenberg castle was built in Innsbruck during the 15th
century.
The Hofkirche, a Franciscan church dating from the 16th century,
contains the monumental tomb of Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian I.

Mirabell
Gardens:
Where Maria and the children were seen dancing around the statue of Pegasus, the winged
horse, and throughout the gardens singing 'Do-Re-Mi'.
Leopoldskron
Castle:
The front side of the castle was used as the Trapp family home, the children were boating
on the Leopoldskron Lake and fell into the water. The Venetian room was copied from the
castle and used as the ballroom.
Hellbrunn Castle:
This hunting castle was built in the early 17th century by Prince-Archbishop Markus
Sittikus. In the gardens the glass pavilion was reconstructed for the pleasure of those
fans still returning after 30 years.
Nonnberg
Nunnery:
Nonnberg is the oldest convent in the German speaking part of Europe. Maria was a novice
there. The baron and Maria were married here in 1927. The scenes for the movie made here
include the opening with the nuns going to Mass and Maria arriving too late.
St.Gilgen
and Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee):
Scenery shown at the beginning of the movie was filmed at Lake Fuschl on the way to St.
Gilgen. Like the Mozart family, visitors from all over the world appreciate the beautiful
village in the Salzkammergut.
Mondsee:
The Basilica of St. Michael is where the movie's famous wedding scenes were filmed.

The Heart of Vienna
Known as the Innere Stadt, the Inner City was once surrounded by
defensive walls, today it is within the Ringstrasse; a broad boulevard, lined with
imposing buildings, monuments, and parks.
The Rathaus, Burgtheater, University, Parliament, and State Opera were
all constructed during a building boom in the late 1800s.
The oldest part of the Hofburg, the former imperial palace, was built
during the 13th century.
In the centre of the Inner City, the Gothic St Stephen's Cathedral
(rebuilt 13th-15th century) has a 113 m steeple that can be seen from most parts of
Vienna.
Vienna's architecture is glorious. Its buildings play together
harmoniously in a symphony of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and typical Austrian
Biedermeier designs.
Prater Park
To get away from the buildings and the monuments, visit the Prater
Park, on an island between the River Danube and the canal.
The large fairground wheel offers a splendid view of the city, and
then there are plenty of outside beer gardens for you take the weight off your feet and
soak up the other side of the Viennese whirl.
