Cairns City -- by Far North Queensland Almanac

Cairns City is in the heart of Tropical North Queensland and the primary gateway to Northern Australia.

A modern, sophisticated tropical city, Cairns is an ideal base from which to explore the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest regions.

Essential items to pack include sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, hat, swimwear, camera and a big smile.

Cairns residents are very friendly, and they enjoy treating the tourists who visit the city. There is an extremely relaxed atmosphere about the city, something you won't find anywhere else in Australia, and for that reason it is recommended you leave the following things at home: Suits, ties, attitude and anything that you might associate with seriousness.

Light Tackle Sport:
The winter months (May to September) are best for targeting Spanish mackerel (king mackerel) and juvenile black marlin (up to 100lbs). The warmer months (October to March) provide good fishing for wahoo, big Spanish mackerel (up to 100lbs), sailfish and black marlin (100 to 250lbs).

Sea Baby IV:
Captain Ross Finlayson and his crewmen target marlin and sailfish using the bait and switch technique, giving the angler the best opportunity to make a cast to a fish that is eager to bite. 12 to 14 wgt rods and quality large capacity reels are favoured, although lighter or heavier tackle may be used depending on the size of the fish, and the angler's skill.
