World Heritage
'World Heritage is neither a beauty contest, nor a race among countries for the greatest number of sites' - Irina Bokova (Bulgarian diplomat who became the first woman to lead UNESCO forward).
We could probably call the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and World Heritage Cities the mother of all lists of places to see before you die.
50 Years of World Heritage
On November 16th, 1972, the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention).

Under the provisions of this Convention, the UNESCO World Heritage Intergovernmental Committee each year inscribes on the World Heritage List natural or cultural sites which must be submitted for listing by member States that have signed the Convention.
The World Heritage List
As of September 2024 the World Heritage List includes 1,223 properties forming part of the cultural and natural heritage which the World Heritage Committee considers as having outstanding universal value.
I don't know if anyone has visited everywhere on this list, or if anyone could, but there's plenty of variety on there for even the most jaded of world travellers.
While driving from Pannonhalma to Salzburg, at the beginning of 2012, I made a vow that we'd try to visit (and write about) more UNESCO World Heritage Sites and World Heritage Cities in the years ahead.
To help others learn and appreciate more about the world we live in and the collective culture we inherit, I'd also like to add some of my material and thoughts on the places I've already visited; although not all of them had the UNESCO seal of approval at the time.
Although counted as one by UNESCO, some of the collections of sites may be listed more than once in this list, if they stradle the borders of neighbouring countries.
It looks like I've visited around 220 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List and been to just over 100 of the World Heritage Cities.
