Copenhagen, or Kobenhavn to give it its Danish name, was a fishing village until Bishop Absalon secured it in 1167.
In 1443, the city was chosen as the capital of Denmark, and it remains so today.
Although it withstood a siege by the Swedes in 1658-1659, Copenhagen suffered great damage and the Danish navy was destroyed, by the British fleet during the Napoleonic wars, in 1801 and 1807.
Hans Christian Andersen made Copenhagen his home. To honour him, Copenhagen erected a bronze statue of the Little Mermaid at the harbour's entrance, in 1913.
Copenhagen Attractions
The main part of Copenhagen is on the eastern coast of Sjaelland Island.
The main pedestrian street is Stroget, about 1,080 meters long.

A tour of Rosenborg castle (and the surrounding Royal Gardens) explores Royal history and the crown jewels. One can also tour the Amalienborg palace (home of the Royal family) as well as Christiansborg (both for the parliament, the royal reception rooms, and the remnants of Bishop Absalon's original castle, which lay beneath the current structure.
It should also be noted that Roskilde Domkirke (where most Danish kings and queens are buried) and Kronborg (the castle in Helsingor (Elsinore), made famous by Shakepeare's Hamlet) are listed as World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
You will probably want to take a tour of the Carlsberg Brewery, to see how they make the famous Danish beverage.
Why not view the old city from the 300 year-old Round Tower.

Kronborg Castle
At the entrance of Øresund, the sound between Sweden and Denmark, the castle Kronborg rises in front of the harbour of the cozy maritime city of Helsing��r.
Kronborg Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the inspiration for Shakespeare's play Hamlet.
Legoland
If you're travelling with kids (or are a Lego enthusiast yourself), a visit to Legoland in Billund is a must.
It's a theme park dedicated entirely to the famous building blocks.
Roskilde
Just a short train ride from Copenhagen, Roskilde is an historic town that's home to the Roskilde Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Viking Ship Museum.
