South Island has many wonderful fjords and sounds, with the
heaviest rainfall usually registered around Milford Sound.
Christchurch, built on land that was once
a swamp, is on the South Island, as is Mount Cook (3,754 m) - Aorangi, or cloud piercer in
Maori - and the popular ski resort of Queenstown.
The area around Queenstown is known as the
Southern Alps, and has 15 peaks over 3,000 metres. It's a great place for skiers in the
winter and you can experience some excellent white-water rafting in the summer.
Abel Tasman National Park
The Abel Tasman Coastal Track is one of New Zealands great
walks. You can walk the length of the track in three to five days, or combine with boat
services to walk some, and cruise the rest.
Marlborough
Situated at the top of the South Island of New Zealand, the
Marlborough region is popular for its wine tasting tours, scenic walks along the 67km
Queen Charlotte Track and boating on the Marlborough Sounds.

The Nelson region is the north-western half of the top of the South
Island: the beautiful country lying between the northern edge of the Southern Alps and a
great sweep of beaches.
