Salem, originally the county seat, is now an independent city and no
longer administratively part of Roanoke County.
Salem is bordered by the city of Roanoke,
to the east, but otherwise adjacent to Roanoke County.
Officially founded in 1802, Salem became an independent city on
December 31st, 1967; to avoid the possibility of annexation into the city of Roanoke.
City of Salem:
Salem is situated in the Shenandoah Valley, between the Alleghany and Blue Ridge
Mountains, on the Roanoke River.
Salem Museum and Historical
Society:
As an educational and cultural resource centre, the Salem Museum maintains an important
collection of local artefacts - including Native American pieces recovered from an early
Indian settlement, relics of the Civil War, and mementoes of daily life from the span of
Salem's history.
