Siskiyou County, the
fifth largest county in California, features spectacular natural beauty and scenic cities
and towns including Yreka, Mt. Shasta, Weed, Dunsmuir, McCloud, and Tulelake as well as
Butte Valley, Scott Valley, Shasta Valley, and the Klamath River Corridor.
Next to the Appalachian region, Siskiyou County is claimed to be one
of the most ecologically diverse regions in the country, if not the world.
Siskiyou County's inland, northern California position borders the
state of Oregon.
The county seat of Siskiyou County is Yreka.

Dorris
Located between Mt. Shasta and the Oregon border, on Hwy 97, the City of Dorris
boasts having the Tallest Flagpole west of the Mississippi River.
Mount Shasta
Mount Shasta is located at
around 3,600 feet (1,100 m) on the flanks of Mt. Shasta, a prominent northern California
landmark along the historic Siskiyou Trail. The
mountain is the second highest volcano in the continental United States.
Today's equivalent of the Siskiyou Trail, Interstate 5, provides easy
access to the City of Mount Shasta, located midway between San Francisco and Portland,
Oregon.

events, and is a resource centre for new and growing businesses and visitors.

Mount Shasta is one of Northern California’s fastest growing new locations for
destination vacationing, from luxury resort retreats to wilderness camping.
Yreka
After Abraham Thompson, a mule train packer travelling along the
Siskiyou Trail from southern Oregon, discovered gold in March 1851 something of a 'gold
rush boomtown' of tents, shanties, and a few rough cabins were soon set up; to accommodate
the thousands of new arrivals looking for gold in 'Thompson's Dry Diggings'; soon to
become known as Shasta Butte City.
In 1852, Yreka was named after an Indian word (Wyekah) for nearby Mt.
Shasta, although Mark Twain prefers the anecdote that a sign with the word BAKERY was
painted on a canvas and laid out to dry. With the B less visible, YREKA would have been
the word mistakenly read backwards.

Yreka Attractions
Yreka attracts many tourists visiting the Siskiyou County Museum
and a number of Gold Rush monuments and parks.
Visitors to the 'Golden City' of California will love the quaint charm
of this former mining town, with its annual Balloon Fair and everyday attractions like the
Miners Museum and historical downtown.
Trout fishing is also popular in the nearby Klamath, Sacramento and
McCloud Rivers, while climbers enjoy getting to grips with Mount Shasta, Castle Crags or
the Trinity Alps; with skiing an option in winter.
Hikers and bikers can also enjoy the trails to the waterfalls, streams
and lakes in the area: McCloud River, Burney Falls, Mossbrae Falls, Lake Siskiyou, Castle
Lake and Shasta Lake.
Yreka Chamber of Commerce:
The Yreka Chamber of Commerce Tourist Information offices are located in the heart of the
Historical District; at 117 West Miner Street, on the corner of Broadway and Miner.
Yreka Western Railroad:
Your trip back in time begins as you arrive at the 1889 Historic Yreka Depot to ride the
'Blue Goose' Train; with steam locomotive #19 pulling vintage, 1920-era Harriman Passenger
Cars through the scenic Shasta Valley and on to the 'Old West' cattle town of Montague.
The eight-mile trip takes around an hour.
