San Mateo County
was formed from parts of San Francisco County and Santa Cruz County, in 1856.
San Mateo County covers most of the San Francisco Peninsula; just
south of San Francisco and north of Santa Clara County.
Just minutes away from downtown San Francisco, northern San Mateo
County is home to San Francisco's International Airport, while Silicon Valley begins at
the southern end of the county.
The county seat of San Mateo County is Redwood City.

The Department operates 16 separate parks, three regional trails and numerous other county
and local trails encompassing 15,680 acres. They are located throughout the County and
represent a wide variety of natural settings including a coastside marine reserve, a
bayside recreational area, coastal mountain woodland areas, and urban sites.

Atherton
Atherton, two miles south-east of Redwood City, and 18 miles
north-west of San Jose, is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States.
Belmont
Belmont was
first settled in 1850.
Colma
Colma, formed in the 1800s as a collection of homes and small
businesses along El Camino Real and the adjacent railroad line, is located on the northern
end of the San Francisco Peninsula.
Colma has also become known as San Francisco's graveyard, or 'The City
of Souls'; a subject covered in the Trina Lopez documentary, A Second Final Rest: The History of San Francisco's Lost
Cemeteries (2005).
Daly City
Daly City is located
about eight miles south-west of downtown San Francisco.
Known as the 'Gateway to the Peninsula', Daly City’s highway
infrastructure includes State Routes 1, 35 and 82, and Interstate 280; bisecting Daly City
as the main transportation route linking San Francisco
with San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Daly City's scenic seven-mile coast is accessible to the public. San
Bruno Mountain, with 2,063 acres of diverse park land, offers spectacular views of the
entire Bay Area and the Pacific Ocean.
Lake Merced Golf and Country Club
is located within Daly City and the Olympic Club-Lakeside and the San Francisco Golf Club
are adjacent to Daly City's northern boundary.
One of only a few majority-Asian cities in the continental United
States, Daly City is known for its large Filipino American population.

East Palo Alto

rural-like setting; its centralised location; proximity to transportation and San
Francisco Bay; and some of the most enviable weather in the nation.
Hillsborough
The main attraction Hillsborough has for home buyers, is its charm.
Hillsborough residents have
continually worked to preserve the town's relaxed country setting. With only a few traffic
lights and streetlights, the town is brightened by its trees, flowers and shrubbery.

San Carlos
City of San Catros:
European discovery and exploration of the San Francisco Bay Area and its islands began in
1542 and culminated with the mapping of the bay in 1775. Colonisation, along with the
conversion of the Indians, followed closely on the heels of exploration. Although San
Carlos lies some distance from either the Mission Dolores in San Francisco or the Mission
at Santa Clara the local inhabitants were undoubtedly affected by mission life, which
brought increased travel by padres and lay people, and the presence of soldiers.

A collection dedicated to man's concept of flight, the museum highlights the many historic
advancements native to northern California and shows how technologies resident here today
will shape the future of air transport.
San Mateo
City of San Mateo:
Situated at the crossroad of three major freeways, San Mateo provides a link with San
Francisco to the north, San Jose to the south, and the East Bay to the east.
Coyote Point Museum:
Take an imaginary walk from the mountains to the shore, exploring the six ecosystems found
in the San Francisco Bay Area; view over 150 animals native to California, including a
bobcat, river otters, rattlesnakes and raptors; explore themed gardens which encompass a
Hummingbird Garden, Butterfly Habitat and Nature's Marketplace, featuring native plants
used by Native Californians; and experience a serene walk-through the park, with a
waterfall and pond, where several indigenous shorebirds and songbirds make their home.
Woodside
Woodside was originally the
home of some of the first English-speaking settlers on the San Francisco Peninsula, in the
1830s. Sawmills were gradually replaced by farms, small cattle ranches, and vineyards.
