Monterey County was
one of the original counties of California, created in 1850 at the time of statehood.
The county is named after Monterey Bay; a name chosen by Sebastian
Vizcaino, in 1602, to honour Gaspar de Zuniga y Acevedo, Conde de Monterrey - the Viceroy
of New Spain.
Monterey itself comes from the Spanish words of monte and rey - hill
and king. Monterey Wine Country.
The county seat of Monterey County is Salinas.

Carmel art galleries are a link to the city’s century-old bohemian roots. In a quaint

The City of Del Rey Oaks was incorporated on 3rd September, 1953.
Gonzales
City of Gonzales:
The City of Gonzales, the 'Wine Capital of Monterey County', is located in the heart of
the fertile, 90-mile long Salinas Valley - between the scenic Santa Lucia and Gabilan
Mountain ranges.
Gonzales Chamber of Commerce:
Gonzales is a rapidly growing town with a revitalised downtown area.
Greenfield
City of Greenfield:
Located in the heart of California's Salinas Valley, the City of Greenfield is
approximately 135 miles south of San Francisco, 95 miles south of San Jose and 60 miles
north of Paso Robles.
King City
City of King City:
King City is situated on Highway 101 in South Monterey County; in the heart of
California's Salinas Valley.
King City Chamber of Commerce:
With a gentle climate and varied topography, King City and Southern Monterey County offer
year-round recreation. The area is home to Los Padres National Forest, spectacular

Marina
City of Marina:
Established in 1918 and incorporated in November of 1975, Marina is located six miles
north of Monterey, on California State Highway 1.

Monterey
The city of Monterey was the capital of California under Spanish
and Mexican rule.
A coastal community in northern California, Monterey is located 350
miles north of Los Angeles and 115 miles south of San Francisco.
Monterey Peninsula Airport
is located just east of the City of Monterey; where regular flights are available to San
Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, LA/Ontario and San
Diego.
City of Monterey:
Monterey's rich history includes Spanish exploration dating back to 1542 and the
establishment of the San Carlos Cathedral, by Father Junipero Serra, in 1770.

The 58,000 square foot Conference Center offers three levels of outstanding meeting space
including an exhibit hall, ballroom, theater, luxurious boardroom, breakouts, patios,
galleries, terraces and banquet facilities.
Monterey-Salinas Airbus:
The Airbus pick-up points is at Monterey Transit Plaza - look for the ‘Airbus’
sign by the Ordway Drug Store; on Pearl at Alvarado.
Monterey-Salinas Transit:
A free 'Wave' trolley, operated seasonally by Monterey-Salinas Transit, takes passengers
from Downtown to Cannery Row at no cost.

John
Steinbeck used real people and places as models for his 1945 novel, Cannery
Row.

Monterey Bay and the surrounding areas and shoreline.
Monterey Fairgrounds:
Home to the Monterey County Fair, the fairgrounds also host the Monterey Jazz Festival,
the annual Monterey Bay Blues Festival, major horse shows and several other events.
Old fisherman's Wharf:
A visit to the beautiful Monterey Peninsula just isn't complete without a rendezvous with
Old Fisherman's Wharf - a myriad of great restaurants, seafood, unique shops, whale
watching, fishing, and bay cruises, theatre and the sights and sounds of Monterey's past.
Pacific Grove
Sharing borders with the Monterey Bay, City of Monterey, Pacific Ocean
and Del Monte Forest, Pacific Grove offers breathtaking views and recreational activities.
City of Pacific Grove:
The town had its beginning in 1875, as a summer Methodist camp; where several hundred
people assembled to worship amidst rough tents. In time, the fragrant pines and fresh sea
air brought others to the Pacific Grove Retreat to rest and meditate.

Sand City
City of Sand City:
Sand City, incorporated in 1960, is located on the Monterey Peninsula; between Marina to
the north, Monterey to the south and Seaside to the east.

City of Seaside:
An ocean-side community that overlooks the beautiful Monterey Bay, on the Central Coast of
California; approximately 115 miles south of San Francisco.
Seaside and Sand City
Chamber of Commerce:
The Seaside/Sand City Chamber of Commerce is the only two city Chamber of the Monterey
Peninsula.
Soledad
City of Soledad:
Located in the central Salinas Valley of Monterey County, the City of Soledad is
approximately 130 miles south of San Francisco, 40 miles southeast of the Monterey
Peninsula, 25 miles south of Salinas and 25 miles north of King City.
From Soledad, visitors can easily enjoy and access fine wine tasting,
the Pinnacles National Monument, recreational and
boating activities at Lake
San Antonio and Lake Naciemento, the Arroyo Seco Wilderness Area, the county
government center in Salinas, the Monterey Peninsula beaches and tourist attractions and
