New York City, well-known as the city that never sleeps, can still be a place of seduction and romance if you look in the right places.

New York For Lovers

Are you thinking of spending a romantic weekend in an exotic city worthy of wooing your lover?

Well, there's beautiful Paris, sumptuous Venice and seductive New York City.

"What's that? Romance in New York City?" you ask.

Is the Big Apple just not cutting it in the love department?

Not surprisingly, many people simply don't equate the words New York City and romance. It's a concept served up weekly on Sex and the City, as we watch Carrie Bradshaw and her lovelorn posse's fruitless searches for true love in the Big Apple. And just what is so romantic about Times Square or the Chrysler Building?

New York City

Well-known as the city that never sleeps, New York can still be a place of seduction and romance if you look in the right places.

First Stop: Central Park

Try snuggling with your mate under a comfy throw, in a horse-drawn carriage ride. The trip through New York's most famous park will create beautiful, life-long memories with your lover by cuddling together in one of the cozy, hansom cabs.

If the weather is warmer and it's a beautiful day or evening, visit the Boathouse Cafe in Central Park. You can enjoy a great meal on the deck overlooking the Lake and Bethesda Fountain. Later on, take your loved one on a romantic boat ride.

Speaking of Bethesda Fountain, there are few locations more lovely to take wonderful wedding pictures. And even if it's not your wedding that's being celebrated at the time, take heart and watch the happy couples pose. If nothing else, it will fill your heart with love and romance.

Maybe you're looking for a secluded spot in the park to enjoy some quality dreamy time with your lover, away from the crowds. The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir is the perfect spot with its scattered, secluded benches and beautiful reflections in the quiet waters.

Empire State Building

Next stop will be one of New York's most famous landmarks - the 'Cathedral of the Skies', better known as the Empire State Building.

At first glance, New York's 102-storey, limestone classic seems anything but romantic. But consider that once you are at the top, you will have a breath-taking view of Manhattan that is well worth the trip.

I guess all those couples who go up the tower on Valentine's day - to say 'I do' - are on to something.

Rockefeller Center

If you really want to impress your mate, you'll have to visit Rockefeller Center.

Probably the most romantic time is winter, where you can skate hand in hand under the watchful eye of Prometheus, Paul Manship's 1934 statue that sits stately on the plaza.

If you're not skaters, you can still enjoy a great meal in one of the sub-ground restaurants and watch the ice skaters whip around the rink to classical music.

Later on, you may wish to walk around the Center to see some of the most wonderful art deco and art noveau mural and mosaics in New York City.

Waterside New York City

Pier 17

If it's seafaring romance you seek, travel along the bumpy cobblestone streets towards Pier 17 and you'll be in the South Street Seaport.

This area is a reflection of New York City's past as a port town that was known around the globe. You can go aboard historic ships and explore the pier that is filled with shops and restaurants of every variety.

The buskers, ranging from classical musicians to magicians that can be found in the area, take you back to a time when street performers flourished.

At the end of the Pier 17 building, you will encounter an open deck that provides great views of the Brooklyn Bridge, regarded by many as the most beautiful bridge in the world. Perhaps even more spectacular is seeing the bridge at night when its lights shine brightly in the dark.

Chelsea Pier

If romance on the high seas is still racing in your mind after your visit to the South Street Seaport, you may want to head down to the Chelsea Pier, on West 23rd street, at the Hudson River in Manhattan. There you can climb aboard the Adirondack, a beautiful 80-foot schooner that cruises along the Hudson River towards New York Harbour.

The two-hour excursions are offered at various times of the day from May to the end of October, but perhaps even nicer, are the evening tours that include champagne and an impressive shimmering light show courtesy of Manhattan's skyline.

Regardless of the time of year you visit New York City keep in mind that romance and love can be found when you least expect it.

Now there's some advice for those gals on Sex and the City!
