Springfield was first settled around the time that Illinois became a state in 1818, and in 1837 it became the state capital.

As Abraham Lincoln lived and practised law in Springfield, from 1837 until he became president in 1861, the city is a memorial to his life, even though he was born in Hardin, Kentucky.

The only home that Lincoln ever owned is now a national historic site, and the Lincoln Tomb contains the burial places of Lincoln, his wife, and three of their sons.
